Common Wide-format (Plotter) Problems

  1. Frayed or Broken Carriage Belt

The most common problem we encounter associated with the HP Designjet plotter is related to a frayed or broken carriage belt, usually due to excessive wear. When there is a carriage belt problem, the LCD panel will typically display a message such as: “switch power off check printhead path” or “System Error 86:01.”

Another common indication of a carriage belt problem is greyish, black debris along the belt path.

It is a high priority to replace a worn or broken belt as soon as possible. Postponing repair of the carriage belt can lead to a damaged carriage assembly and/or electronic components, which are exceedingly expensive to repair.

2. Poor Image Quality

Print quality problems that you may encounter include:

  • Stepped lines
An image that prints with diagonal, stepped lines.
  • Incomplete lines

An image that has missing/faded lines or characters with omitted parts.

  • Color accuracy

Many color accuracy problems are related to paper choice or color accuracy configuration.

3. Plotter Does Not Print

A plotter that does not print could be caused by such things as a networking issue, a faulty electronic module, or a plotter driver issue.

4. Paper Jams

When a paper jam occurs, a paper jam message will normally appear on the LCD front panel, with one of two possible error codes:

81:01 indicating the paper cannot progress into the printer

86:01 indicating that the printhead carriage is unable to move from side to side

5. Out of Memory

When a plotter does not have enough memory, an error message will be displayed on the plotter.

A few options to resolve this problem include:

Replace the current plotter driver with the most current plotter driver from the manufacturer site.

Add additional memory to the plotter.
